What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui (风水) is a traditional Chinese practice of studying how a place, its orientation, surrounding landforms, rooms, entrances, time, and human use relate to the movement and quality of qi. Different schools use different methods, so a responsible reading should explain its assumptions rather than promise guaranteed results.

What does qi mean in Feng Shui?

Qi (气) is traditionally described as the life-giving influence or flow present in people, places, and nature. In practical Feng Shui language, practitioners discuss whether qi is gathering, circulating, stagnant, or rushing. The term belongs to a traditional cultural framework and should not be confused with a medical diagnosis or a measurable scientific promise.

What are Yin and Yang in Feng Shui?

Yin and Yang (阴阳) describe complementary qualities such as quiet and active, shaded and bright, inward and outward, or cool and warm. They are not simply good and bad. Feng Shui uses the idea of balance to consider whether a space feels too still, too exposed, too busy, or appropriately suited to its purpose.

What are the Five Elements or Wu Xing?
什么是五行？
Wu Xing (五行) means the five phases: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They describe patterns of change and relationships, including generating and controlling cycles, rather than only literal physical materials. Feng Shui and BaZi practitioners use the five phases to discuss qualities of environments, dates, directions, and birth charts.
五行指木、火、土、金、水五种变化阶段。五行描述生克等变化关系，并不只是五种物质。风水和八字分析常用五行讨论环境、日期、方向和命盘的特质。
What is a Bagua map?
什么是八卦图？
The Bagua (八卦) is a framework of eight trigrams, each associated with natural patterns, directions, family relationships, and life themes. A Bagua map may be applied to a building, a room, or a compass orientation depending on the school being used. It should not be placed mechanically without first stating which method and orientation are being followed.

What is a Luopan Feng Shui compass?

A Luopan (罗盘) is a traditional Chinese geomancy compass with rings of information used to record direction and, in some schools, time and other relationships. It is a specialist instrument, not merely a decorative compass. Accurate use depends on the practitioner’s method, the building’s reference point, and how magnetic direction is handled.

What is the difference between Luan Tou and Li Qi Feng Shui?

Luan Tou (峦头) focuses on visible forms such as land, roads, buildings, doors, and the shape of a room. Li Qi (理气) uses directional, calendrical, and time-based calculations to interpret qi. Many practitioners combine both: the physical context provides the setting, while calculations add a time and orientation layer.

What is Sha Qi?
什么是煞气？
Sha Qi (煞气) is traditional language for a harsh, disruptive, or unfavorable environmental influence. Examples may include a very sharp alignment, fast-moving traffic, or an exposed layout, depending on the school. It is a descriptive concept in Feng Shui, not a diagnosis of danger. Any practical recommendation should consider real safety, privacy, light, noise, and building conditions first.

What is Sheng Qi?

Sheng Qi (生气) is commonly translated as nourishing, growing, or life-supporting qi. In a space, the phrase may refer to a feeling of vitality, healthy movement, light, openness, and appropriate human activity. It does not mean that one object guarantees wealth or health; context and daily use remain important.
生气通常译为滋养、成长或具有生命力的气。在空间中，它可以形容有活力、流动健康、采光良好、开阔并适合使用的状态。它不表示某件物品可以保证财富或健康，环境和日常使用同样重要。
What is Flying Stars Feng Shui?
什么是玄空飞星？
Flying Stars, or Xuan Kong Fei Xing (玄空飞星), is a time-and-direction method that assigns star patterns to sectors of a building using factors such as construction or renovation period and orientation. Different lineages can use different rules, so a meaningful analysis should state the period, facing direction, chart method, and assumptions instead of presenting one universal answer.

What is a Feng Shui remedy or adjustment?

A Feng Shui adjustment is a practical change intended to improve how a space is used or experienced, such as changing furniture placement, improving circulation, adding privacy, or correcting lighting and clutter. Traditional objects may be used by some practitioners, but no object should be presented as a guaranteed cure. Building safety and professional advice always take priority.

How is Feng Shui different from BaZi?
风水和八字有什么区别？
Feng Shui studies the relationship between people and their environments, while BaZi (八字) studies a birth chart built from the year, month, day, and hour of birth. They are different traditional systems and may be discussed together, but a Feng Shui reading cannot replace a BaZi chart and a BaZi chart does not by itself assess a building.

How accurate are the calculations?

Our calculations use traditional formulas that have been refined over centuries. We use Kangxi Dictionary stroke counts, established Wu Ge numerology, and authentic BaZi methods. All results are reviewed by Master Chun with over 30 years of experience.

What is Wu Ge (Five Grids) numerology?

Why do you use Kangxi Dictionary stroke counts?
为什么使用康熙字典笔画？
Traditional name analysis requires using the original stroke counts from the Kangxi Dictionary (康熙字典), not simplified character strokes. For example, 华 has 14 strokes in Kangxi but only 6 in simplified form. Using the correct strokes is essential for accurate Wu Ge calculations.

BaZi (八字), also known as Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese astrological system based on your birth year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar consists of a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, creating a unique chart that reveals your personality, strengths, and life path.

Do I need my exact birth time?
需要准确的出生时间吗？
Yes, birth time is important for accurate BaZi readings. The Hour Pillar (时柱) reveals important information about your inner self and later life. If you don't know your exact time, we can provide a reading based on the other three pillars, though it will be less complete.

What is San Niang Sha (三娘煞)?

San Niang Sha refers to six inauspicious days each lunar month (3rd, 7th, 13th, 18th, 22nd, and 27th) that are traditionally avoided for weddings. Our date selection automatically excludes these days.

Why do you check family members' birthdates for wedding dates?

Traditional wedding date selection considers the zodiac signs of both the bride and groom, as well as their parents. We check for zodiac clashes (六冲) to ensure the chosen date is harmonious for the entire family.

Why do celebrity BaZi pages use a provisional birth hour?

Many public biographies list a date but not a verified local birth time. The pages calculate the year, month, and day from the sourced date and label the 12:00 Hour Pillar as provisional so readers do not mistake an assumption for a fact.

Do you offer on-site home or office Feng Shui consultations?

No, we do not offer on-site Feng Shui readings. Master Chun has dedicated his practice exclusively to destiny analysis (命理) and date selection (择日) - areas where he has cultivated deep expertise over 30 years. On-site Feng Shui assessment requires a different specialization involving landform analysis (峦头) and compass school methods (理气), which falls outside our focused practice. We believe in doing a few things exceptionally well rather than offering services beyond our core expertise.
